An interview with Tim Hatley, for all those aspiring Performing Arts and Theatre Studies students

For all those aspiring Performing Arts and Theatre Studies students - you may be thinking of a career on stage or behind the scenes? Stage set and costume design is just one area of the theatre's 'visual systems' that is intergral in bringing a production to life. Jayne Kerr, Sales Director for The Travel Adventure, had the opportunity of interviewing Tim Hatley whose stage and set design is currently on view in Shrek the Musical in London. He was also responsible for that amazing pig in "Betty Blue Eyes"!

Tim, when did you interest in Production Design begin?

Tim
My father was in the RAF so I attended many schools ending in a boarding school where there was a fantastic Art teacher called Bill. Up until then I hadn't pursued any art lessons, let alone exams! Bill also had a passion for the theatre and set designs - he encourage me to sit my GCSE O and A levels in Art - and then the harder job of persuading my parents let me go to College and pursue Art and the Theatre. Not a mean feat but Bill won. The rest is history. I graduated with First Class Honors from Central St Martins School of Art & Design.

Jayne
So do you just follow that course and after it look to work for a company?

Tim
No, it doesn't work like that. Production Designers are individuals, whilst in College many would call and ask for students to help them with a big set. Of course, all hands went up and it gave us that practical experience. On leaving, a student aligns to an individual Production Designer. I was lucky enough to work with Jocelyn Herbert, although elderly, she has masses of energy which permeated everyone around her. She was so influential in set design, as prior to her the trend was for sumptuous sets that recreated a room/place rather than a mood or atmosphere. Her tryptic working methods brought the designer, directors and authors of plays and productions closer together.

Your accolades are too many to mention, 2 Tony Awards, Oliver Award, Design Week awards... what was it like at the Tony Awards?

Tim
Well I received the awards for "Private Lives" and "Spamalot" - they're great evenings when you win something but very flat when you don't! These awards are THE "Theatre's Oscars" - to walk down the red carpet AND win is a tremendous feeling.

Jayne
So a producer, say Cameron Mackintosh approaches you to design a set, where do you begin? (This is where Tim takes on an animation all of his own!)

Tim
Each production is a challenge and can only be achieved with my brilliant team on board. It's a bit like riding a horse, you have to sit on it, feel it, mould yourself into that being, relax and enjoy it! I imagine what I want to achieve, for example with Private Lives I saw white, white, white. The ideas just came including a dual set - a multi tiered wedding cake hotel that seems to topple! Once I have the ideas, I then set about making a scale model of the set and how I want it to work. At this point I turn to my trusted team to help me with the technology of working it all.

So we all love Betty - how hard was it to get that pig!

Tim
At first Cameron Mackintosh wanted a real pig! Well you wouldn't believe the problems and cost! We would have had to have 2 pigs - one on stage and one in the wings - as a pig will only move towards another pig. Did you know pigs won't climb stairs? (Not something I come across every day Tim, no) - so we would have had to install a special "pig lift"! In the end I had to make the best pig ever! I knew the guys who produced the animatronics for the BBC's "Walking with Dinosaurs", they were very busy but one of their team in Australia could help. I sent the sketches, what I wanted the pig to do etc. They created exactly what I wanted - even down to each hair is weaved individually just like a wig!

Let's talk about Shrek? London will be the 4th Shrek Set Design you've done?

Tim
Yes. Seattle was first, then on to Broadway, then when it was decided to go on Tour, I had to re design the whole thing to make it lighter in terms of transporting it, and now of course London. This for me, was the biggest challenge for Shrek as the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is such a beautiful Theatre - the pressure was on simply not to let the Theatre down! It needed a fresh look so I took the touring version of the set and just added magic! Again - I had to resort to some animatronics for the dragon and could see in my mind's eye how I wanted the costumes to look. Sometimes I want costumes to do something and can't work out how to achieve that, again, this is where the Team comes in and I enlist the help of a fantastic costume designer - she solves the problems and the set comes together.

Your greatest challenge?

Tim
"The 3 lives of Lucie Cabrol"! I had to create a set where the roof fell in and not kill the actors on stage. In the end I used joined rafters, there were lots of teething problems, but it worked and the show was a smash hit!

Jayne
And your favourite?

Tim
Working with Theatre Complicite. It's interesting work, enjoyed by the young, very physical and thought provoking for the young of today.

Jayne
So is it just Theatre Design?

Tim
Oh No! It can be film sets, dance sets - I won a Design Award for my Vivienne Westwood Exhibition Design.

Jayne
So in films, you've worked with very famous people, who is your favourite?

Tim
Well, I don't really have a favourite (some thought here) - but I was so impressed by the beauty of Julia Roberts when I did the set design for the film "Closer"

Jayne
I could sit here for hours so let's just ask some questions about you. What's your favourite destination?

Tim
Undoubtedly South Africa. I have a house there and go as often as I can. There is no place for me with the energy which abounds there, a place that wants to change and wants to create. There are wonderful artists there and each time I go I like to catch up on new art. Coupled with I love safaris too.

TIM HATLEY was the winner of the 2009 Tony Award(R) for Best Costume Design for his work on Shrek The Musical, the 2002 Tony(R) and Drama Desk awards for Private Lives on Broadway, the 2002 Olivier Award for Humble Boy and Private Lives in the West End and the 1997 Olivier Award for Stanley at the Royal National Theatre. Broadway credits include: Spamalot; Private Lives; Vincent in Brixton; The Crucible and Stanley. Film credits include: Stage Beauty; Closer and Notes on a Scandal. Previous theatre work includes working with Theatre de Complicite, the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the English National Opera and in London’s West End. Tim graduated from Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in London.

A Recent College Trip to Paris Rocked for Students of Travel, Leisure and Tourism

After returning from a recent college trip to Paris with The Travel Adenture, the students were so thrilled with their trip that they wanted everybody to know about it.

First, a word from their tutor: "We had a brilliant trip and the students were great ambassadors to the college, to themselves and to the Leisure, Travel and Tourism courses. They learnt and saw some fantastic sites and took part in some great activities whilst we were there. A real highlight of the trip was the Eiffel Tower, the boat trip down the River Seine, the Stadt de France and the Disney Parks. They had an amazing time and learnt a great deal about the French culture, language, way of life and the history of this country. Overall they all really valued and enjoyed the trip and built a great rapport up with each other and the staff which I am sure will continue now they are back at college. It has inspired many of them to travel, to continue in their studies, gain fantastic grades and then pursue a career in this industry. A successful trip all round."

Rachel Howarth – "Paris was amazing, words cannot describe it. You had to be there. The Eiffel Tower was incredible. I saw some amazing views and sights, but Disneyland Paris was so magical, I have memories that will last forever."

Ben Ashley – "Had an amazing time, with amazing friends. Everyone was really happy and jolly and I am looking forward to the next residential."

On Thursday 3rd November 2011 a party from Asda Eastleigh, Totton and Fareham boarded a coach in the wee small hours to journey via Eurostar to France with The Travel Adventure. They spent three days at the Disneyland Paris Sequoia Lodge, visiting all the attractions in the Disney Park, Studios and Village.

On Friday night there was a spectacular display of fireworks, lasers and flames set to music over Lake Disney. They were very fortunate with the weather which was bright and sunny almost all the time. Disneyland Paris had just started to decorate for Christmas so everywhere was awash with fake snow, wreaths and lights.

The younger members of the party had a really grand time of it, even if some of their parents looked a bit shattered by the end.

On the way home they had a whistle-stop tour of Paris, taking in the Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine as well as the posh shops in the Champs-Elysée. Many thanks to Jane Fairfax and all the helpful staff at The Travel Adventure who arranged this special discount holiday for Asda Colleagues.

Recently our Managing Director Ian Kerr and his wife Jayne, Sales Director, attended a VIP Key Partner Special Event in Disneyland Paris.

This was a high profile event to show case plans for the big 20th Anniversary Celebrations in Disneyland Paris beginning April 2012. Key Partners from all over Western and Eastern Europe attended.

It's top secret but what was show cased is something not to be missed! Disney's UK Team, headed by Vice Chairman Peter Welch, awarded The Travel Adventure an award in recognition of 20 years as Key Partner with Disneyland Paris and continuing to sell the Dream! This goes proudly alongside all other Awards won. In addition, for the first time ever, a non Disney personnel was asked to be guest of honour in the Main Parade in the Disneyland Park. This was no other than Jayne - she was thrilled.

Our picture shows a very happy Jayne joining Father Christmas on his colourful sleigh. At the end of it all - the Disney Princesses and handsome Princes were there to join Jayne in a unique photo.

Next year is going to be a year not to be missed! Hope to see many of you there.

The staff at The Travel Adventure are thrilled that Ian Kerr, our Managing Director, was honoured with the "Outstanding Contribution to Group Travel" Award by an individual, at the 2008 Group Travel Awards.

Ian Kerr
Ian Kerr is the epitome of a travel industry professional who understands his business from the grass roots up. He has spent almost 50 years in travel and, along the way, has gained an impressive amount of knowledge and experience in coach operations, holiday company development, airline operations, financial directorship and personal involvement in disaster management.

His fondness for travel began with a five-year government-funded management training scheme in 1960 with the Edinburgh-based Scottish Motor Traction Company, from which he emerged with an Associate Member of the Institute of Transport Qualification. The course equipped members with a thorough knowledge of the industry, encompassing elements such as timetabling, traffic control, maintenance, conducting, vehicle maintenance and crewing and depot management, whilst earning the princely sum of £5 a week!

From here, Ian moved south and joined Epsom Coaches (formerly HR Richmond) where he was Tours Manager. In 1967, he was appointed by Clarksons Holiday, in London, as Reservations Manager with subsequent promotions to Operations Executive then Overseas Manager. Whilst with Clarksons Holiday, Ian had the unenviable responsibility of contacting bereaved families following the fatal Dan Air crash en route from Manchester to Barcelona. Also during this period, Ian had to curtail the chaos that derived from travellers arriving in Spain to be greeted by unfinished hotel accommodation.

In 1971 he joined Pontins as General Manager of Pontinental Holidays. In 1974 he was headhunted by Schools Abroad where he became Managing Director and in 1985, as Grosvenor Hall Leisure plc, the company went public, was listed on the stock exchange and purchased several travel companies. Granada Travel plc purchased the company in 1986 after which Ian became Executive Director with additional responsibilities as Managing Director of Nielsens Ski and Schools Abroad. He left in 1989 with a view to setting up his own company. In 1993 he founded The Travel Adventure, in East Sussex, which has been awarded the 'Disneyland Resort Paris Business Partnership Award' and obtained a full ATOL license three years ago, which allowed the company to expand its portfolio to include travel to 35 different worldwide destinations. Despite a four-way heart bypass operation, Ian still works full-time for the company and retains the same passion and commitment for the travel industry.

Outstanding Contribution to Group Travel by an Individual
This special award recognises outstanding and dedicated service for the benefit of GTOs over a number of years by an individual, rather than a company. It is different from the other presentations in that it is the only one not based on the votes of GTO readers, but decided upon by a panel of industry professionals. Previous recipients of this award include Bob Pilbeam, CPT's Coaching Consultant, David Steele, Sales and Marketing Director of City Cruises and Terry Weller, former Sales Administration Manager for P&O Ferries.
